Greek yogurt has long been a staple in my diet. I like anything that doesn’t require cooking! But seriously, it’s a great snack. I know a lot of people shy away from dairy for various reasons, but I have never had issues with dairy so I enjoy it in moderation (and usually don’t eat anything other than Greek yogurt, fancy cheeses and sometimes raw milk).
I stick to 0% plain Greek yogurt. There is wayyyy too much sugar in the flavored ones. Also, you might notice that different brands have different consistencies. I used to eat Chobani (more watery) and Fage (thicker) regularly. But now I only eat Oikos (Stonyfield) because they use milk from humanely treated cows. Of course, the flavor takes some getting used to if you are used to traditional yogurt. It actually reminds me of sour cream, which is great because I love sour cream and I actually use Greek yogurt to replace it in my Mexican dishes. But I also eat it as a sweet snack (weird I know). My rule is, if you don’t like the flavor of something, the best way to mask the flavor is to add other flavors you do like. Some people add honey, agave, Stevia, vanilla extract, etc. Every now and then I use cinnamon. But I really prefer to use fruit as my sweetener. I LOVE fruit!
I usually just chop up an apple (or sometimes strawberries) and toss it in my yogurt with a handful of walnuts. This has been my go-to snack for years. It is super high in protein and you get some carbs and healthy fats as well. It’s the perfect snack or mini-meal. I try not to eat much meat so this is a great way for me to get extra protein and also take care of my sweet tooth.
Today I was out of apples but I had some cherries fresh from the farmer’s market. I chopped them up and put them in my yogurt along with a handful of plain, unsalted almonds. OMG! So good!!! This combination is definitely my new favorite! I can’t wait to go back to the farmer’s market this weekend to get more cherries!
