Sometimes it can be hard to determine what you are actually buying at a grocery store. It can be really hard to determine whether the apple or banana you’re buying was grown in South American and it’s infested with pesticides or grown locally without any genetic modifications.
I typically find that organic produce is labeled well but did you know that you can simply look at a PLU code sticker on a piece of produce to determine if it’s organic or GMO? Here’s a quick guide:
- 4 digit number – conventional practices
- 5 digit number starting with a 9 – organic produce
- 5 digit number starting with an 8 – GMO (genetically modified)
